In an economy that is putting every American under
financial stress, major corporations realize that every
consumer dollar counts, especially those that
represent a sizable portion of their customer base.
In 2008 Black and Hispanic consumers spend over
$1 trillion dollars fueling the American economy and
most former Glenn Beck advertisers clearly understand
this.
The Montgomery Bus Boycott taught African Americans
that if we were willing to bear the inconvenience and in some
cases hardship of walking instead of patronizing the racist
segregated practices of forcing us to ride in the back of the bus,
we would eventually bring about change. After white retailers
along the bus routes saw how much money they were loosing by
our absence, they too eventually wanted the boycott to end.
Throughout our history we have used boycotts quite effectively
to bring about change, but they usually take time to get the word
out and spread into action. That is not the case in the age of
the internet. Messages can spread through out the online world in 24
hours and today’s retailers and manufacturers know it.
That is why many have not given a second thought to pulling
their advertising support for the racist comments of Glenn Beck.
Associated Press reports:
A total of 36 Fox advertisers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc.,
CVS Caremark, Clorox and Sprint, directed that their commercials
not air on Beck's show, according to the companies
and ColorofChange.org, a group that promotes political
action among blacks and launched a campaign to get
advertisers to abandon him. That's more than a dozen
more than were identified a week ago.
The Clorox Co., a former Beck advertiser, now says that "we do
not want to be associated with inflammatory speech used by either
liberal or conservative talk show hosts." The maker of bleach and
household cleaners said in a statement that it has decided not to
advertise on political talk shows.
Clorox knows that proportionately Blacks and Hispanics are heavy
users of bleach and disinfectants. To sent a message to the
Glenn Beck advertisers who are still thinking about
it click here. ColorOfChange.com
